An essential learning environment
This kindergarten allows the youngest children to enjoy a unique and particularly effective educational environment while their parents work. The school for older children, run by the same institution, is located in the Moqattam district.
Encouraged by Sr. Emmanuelle and Sr. Sara,
In 1975, the congregation of the "Sisters of Mary" founded the association Champions of the Slums. In 1982, a school was founded in Moqattam and shortly afterwards the Maadi - Tora kindergarten was established. More than 60,000 people have now benefited from the scheme in the areas of education, access to culture, health, food and sports.
At the very beginning, only 25 children were enrolled, but today almost 2,000 are regularly and thoroughly provided with education. The project has grown admirably through patience, effort and courage. In 2020, a cultural centre was also inaugurated.
Our work started in February of 2017…
2017:
A puppet show based on two Goha stories and a snack with the children; a small bilingual lexicon with the key words of the story had also been put together, as well as greeting cards for the school children.
2020:
We get back in touch with the school, to which the Charity Week team very generously donated all the funds raised during the school year.
2021:
January: New food donations are made, at the initiative of a student.
April: After a far too long break, we meet the children again and organise a half-day of play and artistic activities, concluded by some songs and a snack to take away
June: Some sports activities and art workshops are organised; our intervention ends with short stories and a snack to take away
